BREVE CENNO STORICO L’Hovawart è un’antichissima razza tedesca di cani d’utilità. Nel tedesco medioevale, il suo nome significa guardiano della fattoria (Wart = Wächter = guardiano ; Hova = Hof = corte). Dal 1922, questa razza è stata selezionata su una nuova base, partendo da cani simili che si trovavano ancora nelle fattorie. Inoltre, durante i primi anni di questo allevamento, si sono fatti degli incroci con dei Pastori tedeschi, dei Terranova, dei Leonberger e altre razze ancora. Si è finito per ritrovare il tipo originale di cani di utilità grazie a delle misure di selezione molto severe. Nel suo paese d’origine, si dà una grande importanza allo stato di salute dell’Hovawart. Specialmente la displasia dell’anca è stata ridotta, in Germania, ad una percentuale molto piccola grazie a una stretta selezione, durata decenni, di cani esenti da questa tara. Il Club si augura che questi sforzi vengano imitati dai club di razza Hovawart di tutti i paesi.

COMPORTAMENTO-CARATTERE Riconosciuto cane da lavoro dai molteplici impieghi. Di carattere gentile e sempre uguale. Possiede istinto protettivo e battagliero, fiducia in sé e capacità di sopportare la fatica, temperamento medio; il tutto combinato con un gran fiuto. Le proporzioni armoniche del suo corpo e la speciale devozione alla sua famiglia, fanno di lui un eccezionale cane d’accompagnamento, da guardia, da inseguimento e da soccorso.

NERO-FOCATO
Il mantello è nero e lucido, il colore delle focature è biondo medio. Sulla testa, le marcature iniziano sotto il ponte del naso e si estendono intorno all'angolo delle labbra fino al segno della gola. Am Kopf beginnen die Abzeichen unter dem Nasenrücken und ziehen sich um die Lefzenwinkel herum bis zu den Kehlflecken. Die punktförmigen Abzeichen über den Augen sind deutlich sichtbar. Die Abzeichen an der Brust bestehen aus zwei nebeneinander liegenden Flecken, die miteinander verbunden sein können. An den Vorderbeinen reichen die Abzeichen, von der Seite gesehen, von den Zehen bis etwa zur Fessel und enden an der Hinterseite in Höhe der Ellenbogen. An den Hinterbeinen sind die Abzeichen, von der Seite gesehen, unterhalb des Sprunggelenks als breiter Streifen, oberhalb des Sprunggelenks als schmaler Streifen sichtbar, der sich über die Vorderseite der Hinterbeine bis auf Höhe der Bauchdecke erstreckt. Die Abzeichen sind auch unterhalb des Schwanzansatzes vorhanden. Die Abzeichen sind in allen Bereichen deutlich ausgeprägt.
